Hallal Wood Cased Pencils
Consumer protection Laws prohibits pencil Manufacturers to use Raw Materials or inputs used in the manufacturing process which may harm the user if the material is swallowed or comes in physical inner body contact. To maintain a balance of harmful elements, a minimum intake is defined and the product is subject to international certification that the Pencil conforms to the standards. All reputable manufacturers comply with the requirements while imports in certain countries are subject to the requirements of such standards laid down in EN71, ASTM.D4236, BS5665 and some specific standards of certain individual countries.
While the world has taken care of consumer’s health protection and has restricted use of hazardous material in the manufacturing of Wood Cased Pencils the Islamic world while observing the world health standards failed to constitute the concept of HALLAL requirements which is very much essential according to Islamic Laws. Ingredients used in Pencil Manufacturing do contain materials which are not Hallal and it is a common practice with the pencil user irrespective being adult or a child, often hold Pencil in their mouth and mostly chew the Pencil eating up the Pencil even the eraser tips.
Wood cased Pencils contain normally of the following materials or ingredients:-
Wood - Casing of the Pencils.
Glue - Bonding material of the wood.
Lead - Inner writing core of the Pencil.
Paint - Paint / Lacquer used to polish finish the Wooden Body of the Pencil.
Printing Foils - To decorate – inscribe Brand etc.
Ferrule - Metal or Plastic adapter for Eraser housing.
Eraser - Rubber / Plastic Eraser Tip inserted in the Ferrule.
Wood
Straight grain, Coniferous is used after slicing and Autoclave treatment impregnating Waxes, Additives and Color Dyes.
Glue
Animal Glue, Synthetic – PVA are used.
Lead
Graphite, Clay, Fillers, Pigments, Dyes, Animal Fats, Fatty Acids, Carboxylic acids, Mineral Waxes, Mineral Oils, Synthetic Binders and additives are used. (Major contents are animal fats specifically lard used by non Islamic Pencil manufacturing and exporting countries as it is the cheapest animal fat available)
Paint
Resins, Fillers, Pigments and Dyes, Metallic Pigments, Flatting agents, Flow and Slip Additives, Fatty Acids, Binders, Softening Agents, Adhesion Additives, Vegetable oils, Plasticizing Agents and Alcohols – Petroleum Solvents.
Printing Foils
Other then Metallic and Vacuum Coated Deposit films all Transfer films contain ingredients similar to Paint Materials – Printing Inks.
Ferrule
Aluminum Anodized Metal and Plastic Housings.
Eraser
PVC is the cheapest material extensively used which is banned under the Consumer Safety Standards. Non – PVC Eraser Material is the Standard Material to be used.

Raw Materials produced as a product of Animal Fat or Pencils containing Animal Fat specially Lard which is the cheapest and abundantly commonly available fat used in the other then Islamic Worlds and not prohibited for use in Pencils by the World available standards finds its way to the Muslim and vegetarian populace
Animal Fat and All Fat by-products, additives, Agents defined above are product of animals not conforming to and not in accordance with Islamic rights and are not Hallal, forbidden to be used by any Muslim OR Jew and even followers of Hindu Faith who do not consume animal fat in any form.
The Method of ASTM certification of Pencils raw materials or HALLAL certification process can be used by the Pencils Manufacturers desiring to obtain Hallal certification after which they can be authorized to use the official HALLAL logo.
